Description
of Service
School-To-Success is a life
purpose, career planning and computer technology-training program. The program
offers training in the areas of life purpose, creative goal setting, career
planning and career development. These services are provided through the
School-To-Success curriculum, career counseling, and career coaching programs.
School-To-Success serves at-risk and disadvantaged middle school to high school
and college students who do not know what they want
to be or do after high school and at various points in their life. The School-To-Success
curriculum has eight success steps and was designed to help students develop
basic computer skills for school and work, answer the question “What’s after
high school for me?” and create a five year plan for future success. The
curriculum was designed to meet the needs of parents, guardians, schools,
colleges, universities, faith-based organizations, community based organizations
and employers in the area of career planning and development. Our
mission is to help middle school through high school and college students 1.
More than 50 percent of all high school seniors do not know what they
want to be or do after graduation. They lack clear goals for their future. 2.
Career planning, career development and career counseling are inadequate
with a counselor-student ratio of 1-to-490 on the low end and 1-to-994 on the
high end in California. Other states have a similar problem with different
statistics. Activities
to accomplish our mission will be conducted as follows: 1. Trained education and career professionals will make presentations at Parent-Teacher Organization meetings, service clubs, schools, colleges, universities, and businesses to address factual information concerning the major areas of concerned listed above.
1. Personal Success Assessment (PSA) 2. Develop basic computer skills 3. Discover your purpose in life 4. Explore education and career opportunities 5. Identify your skills 6. Make a list of “things you love to do” an inventory 7. Develop a Resume 8. Do mock interviews 9. Create a 5 year education and career plan for future success—a Living Career Plan (LCP) To
achieve maximum results, students will be trained in groups of 3 as follows: · Small Class: 3-6 students per instructor · Medium Sized Class: 9-12 students per instructor · Large Class: 15 students per instructor A
major part of our mission is based on stage 5 of Erik Erikson’s Eight Ages of
Man. This stage states that the care-giver’s task is to help teenagers (ages
12-18) develop independence from their parents and resolve confusion about sex
roles and occupation (Elkind, 1970). School-To-Success was designed to help
parents and guardians accomplish this task.
