A Case Study of the School-To-Success Program

A qualitative case study investigated the implementation of the School-To-Success career-planning program at a K-8 School. Three research questions, designed to determine whether eighth-grade students would benefit from the 9-week program, guided the study: (a) Would participation in the School-To-Success program help students to form clear goals for their future careers?; (b) Would participation in the program help students to become more motivated to learn?; and (c) would participation in the program help students to become more aware of the connections between school and their career choices?

Participants included 26 eighth-grade students and 20 of their parents. Research data were gathered from (a) student self-assessments administered at the beginning and at the end of the program; (b) a 10-item program-evaluation questionnaire completed by students and by parents; and (c) classroom observations conducted by the researcher, an English teacher, and the school’s director of development.

Few qualitative studies have investigated the implementation of a career- education program at the middle-school level. The results of this study indicated that the School-To-Success program can empower middle-school students to set clear career goals, to be motivated to learn, and to understand the correlation between what they are learning in school and their future goals.

According to a 2 year pilot study in Inglewood, Hawthorne and Lawndale California and a 9-week dissertation study at a middle school in Los Angeles, the School to Success program is an investment in the future of students. The outcome of the 9-week dissertation study/program at the middle school was determined to be a success by the principal and two other observers. As a result of the program’s success, School-To-Success will be offered at the school site when funds becomes available.

The School-To-Success model was tested at six community based organizations and three high school sites. The dissertation study was conducted at one middle school site. After a 2-year pilot test plus a 9-week dissertation research study, here is what students had to say about School-To-Success:
